A pinched nerve in your back can cause intense pain that radiates from the lower back down one leg, extending from the buttock to the back of the thigh, and sometimes reaching the calf and foot.
The onset of pain from a pinched nerve can be sudden or gradual. Typically, it’s described as a sharp, shooting pain similar to an electric shock. Moving the affected leg, back, or other areas often intensifies the pain.
While the pain may follow a consistent path along the leg, there are often specific areas where it is more severe. This discomfort is commonly accompanied by numbness or tingling along the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve group in the body, which runs from the lower back down both legs.
Causes of a Pinched Nerve
A pinched nerve occurs when pressure or irritation affects the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve. This pressure can be caused by several factors, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal), or, in rare instances, by an infection or tumor.
The sciatic nerve is the largest in the body, measuring about three-quarters of an inch in diameter in adults. It originates in the sacral plexus, a network of nerves in the lower back (lumbosacral spine).
This nerve and its branches control movement and sensation in the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, and toes. When the sciatic nerve is compressed or “pinched,” it can cause pain to spread along these pathways, leading to discomfort in various parts of the body.
Common causes of pinched nerve pain include bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy, spinal stenosis, spinal tumors, spinal infections, or trauma. Each of these conditions can put pressure on the sciatic nerve or related nerve roots, triggering pain and related symptoms.
